GETTING AROUND:
FOOT: There are several nice walks around the Casale S. Brigida. We often take morning walks through the farms and woods in every direction. Hiking up the hill and towards or through Calvi,
leads to the summit of Mt. S. Pancrazio, where there are many marked hiking trails.
BUS: There is also a bus stop in Poggiolo, just up the hill from the Casale S. Brigida just up the hill from the Casale S. Brigida.
CAR: There are many lovely Medieval hilltowns within a 30minute drive… not to mention several charming restaurants. Enquire in the Bar for more information.
Calvi dell’Umbria:
Calvi is about a 45 minute walk (10minute drive) East from the Casale Santa Brigida. To get to Calvi, walk up the hill and take your first right on to a gravel road. Follow the gravel road staying to the left for about 20 minutes and you will come to a small hill–stay to the left. At the end of the gravel road you will take a right on to the main road. Follow the main road for another 15 minutes and you will see a sign for Calvi pointing to the left. Go left and stay on the lower right-hand road. Calvi’s outdoor market, where you can find fresh local cheeses, meats, fruit, veggies, a smattering of clothes and other items is every Tuesday, 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. For more information about Calvi and the surrounding towns, check out the tourist information in our library in the bar.
Poggiolo:
This tiny Medieval settlement is about 300m away from the Casale Santa Brigida (go up the hill and turn left… notice it’s old storage cantinas tunneled into the hill on the right side of the road). It is very small and has only a church as a public building, but it’s little streets are quaint and can lead you down into the valley for a nice nature walk.
Poggio:
The charming Medieval hilltown of Poggio (a miniature Minas Tirith) is a 30minute walk (5 minute drive) to the NorthWest. To get to Calvi, walk up hill, jogging left and then up until it T’s at the main road connecting Calvi to Narni. Turn left and walk until you see the gorgeous little town on the hill to your right. To get into it, you actually have to go just past it, cross the little bridge and take the steep road up the hill. I puts you out next to the ancient tower at the top, where you can park and walk down into the town. Don’t miss the hanging piazza and its Medieval church with recently discovered 15thC frescoes.
